Atari’s Speakerhat Is The Wearable Nobody Ever Asked For

It’s a hat with speakers in it. The Speakerhat. Go home Atari, you’re drunk.

I checked the calendar, it’s not April 1st, and yet it feels like Atari are pranking us for some reason. As part of their new line to be known as ‘Atari Connected Life’ the classic video game company have introduced the Speakerhat.

There’s no ambiguity in that name. It is literally a hat with speakers in -or more specifically – a baseball cap with a two high end speakers in the peak. There’s a microphone too, presumable for pairing the device with your mobile phone via bluetooth.

Atari Connect COO Michael Arzt is quoted as saying“With the recent reveal of our Ataribox project and now with Speakerhats, we envision a full range of connected personal devices that live at society’s intersection of entertainment, technology and social connectivity that legendary film worlds like Blade Runner 2049 foretell.”

Blade Runner 2049

The Speakerhat forms part of a tie-in with the release of Blade Runner 2049, the trailer for which features an Atari logo emblazoned upon the side of a skyscraper.

If I’m brutally honest, I’d take the cap without the speakers and the whole concept feels like the result of a 5:30pm board meeting on a Friday between a group of executives that know squat about fashion, or branding, and desperately want to get to the pub.

Oh, and I swear – the first teenager I see on a bus playing music through a Speakerhat is going to wind up ‘connected’ to it in all the wrong ways. That’s on you Atari, that’s on you.
