The Bring Back Dredd campaign is still fighting hard for another slice of Dredd action but now their target has changed slightly.
Dredd was one of the very first articles I wrote about for The Unheard Nerd and I have been following the story quite closely ever since. The film was one of my favourites of 2012 and you can read my original review.
Despite the film gaining positive reviews and being hailed by the fans for portraying the characters just like their comic book origins, the film was a financial flop.
Dredd was an independant picture made with the help of several investors. Unfortunately due to the poor box office returns each investor only recieved a small return, therefore no one was interested in laying down more money for a sequel.
This didn’t stop the fans. A petition was set-up to show that there was an interest in another film. A Dredd day was organised when, thanks to the fans, sales of the film on DVD and Bluray were pushed to the number one spot on Amazon to gain awareness of their campaign.
Now, nearly four years later, it is quite clear that despite encouraging words from Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby and 136,000 signatures, there won’t be another cinematic outing for Dredd.
But don’t hang up your Lawgiver pistol just yet.
With the advent of many cable and internet entertainment companies such as HBO and Netflix providing such high quality shows, why can’t it be one of these who could now provide new Dredd content. This is the new target for the Bring Back Dredd campaign.
As their website states,
“With the success of series such as Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and The Man in the High Castle, the clamour of the growing fanbase for more from the incredible world of the 2012 DREDD movie cannot be ignored – we call on TV and movie producers to step up to the plate and give us more, either through a pay-to-view TV series or a new movie!”
I’ve already signed up! Why don’t you? Who knows what could happen next?
