With Captain Marvel owning the box office this weekend, Carol Danvers’ ‘Nine Inch Nails’ shirt has attracted some criticism.
Captain Marvel has hit the box office hard with the film surpassing $150 million at the box office in its opening weekend.
Set in the ’90s, the film’s protagonist, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) embraces the fashion of the era by wearing a t-shirt carrying the famous ‘NIN’ logo of industrial band ‘Nine Inch Nails’.
Criticism of the shirt came in unlikely circumstances. Rob Sheridan, former art director for Nine Inch Nails, took to twitter with suggestions that the item worn by Larson in the film is in fact a bootleg.
In a series of tweets he explains: “Captain Marvel claims to be a “hero,” yet she wears what is very clearly a BOOTLEG NIN shirt, stealing money from hard-working musicians. Shameful“. Sheridan continues: “You can tell it’s a bootleg because they always get the outside rectangle wrong. It’s too thin, it’s supposed to be the same width as the letters. I had to deal with people fucking up this logo for years, it was all I could see through the whole fucking movie. This is my curse“.
A seemingly scornful outburst, but Sheridan did go on to tweet: “But the movie was fun. Please make Goose an Avenger” and later confirmed that his comments should be recognised as a joke.
But don’t feel too concerned for the profit line of the band fronted by Trent Reznor. Nine Inch Nails have collaborated with Marvel for a special shirt design which is available to pre-order on the band’s website now.
The ‘Captain Marvel x NIN’ shirts are available in white and grey marl with a black logo that carries a crossover of Captain Marvel’s star and the ‘NIN’ logo, thankfully with the correct weighting on the border. For those potential Carol Danvers cosplayers out there, you can also buy a legit version of the shirt worn by the character from the band store too.
Pre-orders are open now with shipping beginning from March 25th. Shirts cost $25 plus shipping.
