Despite controversy surrounding the original series creator, Ren & Stimpy is set for a reboot with a new creative team.
Further cementing their commitment to adult comedy animated shows, Comedy Central have announced that ’90s favourite, Ren & Stimpy, are making a comeback.
Something of a psychedelic viewing experience, the series followed the exploits of an unhinged Chihuahua and his dim, but well meaning sidekick cat as they stumble through life. ‘The Ren & Stimpy’ Show debuted on Nickelodeon in 1991 and ran for five seasons amassing a large cult following.
Unlike ‘Rugrats’ or ‘Doug’, which debuted on the kids network at around the same time, Ren & Stimpy wasn’t particularly geared towards younger viewers. It’s gross-out humour placed if firmly under adult viewing.
The show will now be revived and rebooted for Comedy Central who also announced last month that they would also be bringing back ‘Beavis and Butthead’, another ’90s animated favourite, alongside a ‘Daria’ spin-off titled ‘Jodie’.
Comedy Central have been quick to distance this reboot from the show’s original creator, John Kricfalusi stating that the show will “re-imagine these iconic characters with a new creative team” . In 2018 a Buzzfeed News piece detailed worrying allegations of underage sexual abuse towards a young fan at the hands of Kricfalusi.
