The BBC tease Doctor Who series eleven midway through the World Cup Final. Jodie Whittaker’s companions feature.
The BBC chose half time of football’s biggest stage to debut the new teaser for Doctor Who’s eleventh series. Former England players and now presenters of football coverage at the BBC, Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer, tee’d up the tease is questionable style.
‘Knock, knock?’ asked Lineker. You know how that played out. Half time analysis of the World Cup final took a fifty second break to showcase Jodie Whittaker’s appearance as the thirteenth Doctor.
As if by design, Lineker and co feature in the teaser as their Match of the Day show plays on televisions in the background.
The Doctor’s new companions Tosin Cole, Mandip Gill and Bradley Walsh all feature as if receiving some kind of awakening. In each instance a brief glimpse of the new Doctor leads to a more satisfying reveal of Jodie Whittaker.
Whittaker becomes the first female Doctor in the show’s fifty five year history as pressure on the BBC mounted for more diversity in a show that has always featured a white, male lead.
Despite this teaser, fans still have a little longer to wait for more Doctor Who. The show returns for an eleventh series this autumn.
