The Geekend Review | Taking a look back and forward at cool geek news.

Geekend Review

The Geekend Review, “the cool form of uncool before uncool became a thing”. We take a look at some of the more exciting news stories to have dropped over the last week and what’s coming soon.

More Gotham news this week as Fox run a series of character pics on instagram, facebook ruins Oculus Riff for most people by shelling out extortionate amounts of money to buy it, Lego punishes out wallets once more with a full set of Simpsons minifigs, AMC continues to push out original programming with spin-off series for Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead and a look at what’s on the big screen now.

Gotham Portraits Hit Instagram

An instagram account dedicated to Fox’s forthcoming television series Gotham popped up last week with a short series of character portraits including Ben McKenzie as lead character Detective James Gordon, Robin Lord Taylor  as Oswald Copperpot (The Penguin) and Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth. Catch also images of Selina Kyle (Catwoman) and Detective Harvey Bullock.

GOTHAM is an origin story of the great DC Comics super villains and vigilantes, revealing an entirely new chapter that has never been told. From executive producer/writer Bruno Heller (“The Mentalist,” “Rome”), GOTHAM follows one cop’s rise through a dangerously corrupt city teetering on the edge of evil and chronicles the birth of one of the most popular super heroes of our time.

Facebook Ruins Virtual Reality

I’ve got news for Facebook. You’re just not cool! There I said it, let’s move on, except we can’t because the social media giant made a big noise when it went out and spunked $2billion snapping up what is possibly the world’s first viable virtual reality brand, Oculus Rift.

There’s been a buzz surrounding the gaming system, designed to fully immerse the user into virtual reality landscapes, which began life as a Kickstarter campaign. But now many of it’s accrued fanbase are turning their backs on Oculus Rift thanks to the involvement of Facebook and it’s distinctly uncool image. People are jaded by the company’s unavoidable and irritating advertising which could, quite literally, be ‘in your face’ as their plans look set to increase the use of the headset from a pure gaming experience to include communication, media and entertainment.

Simpsons Minifigs Are Wonderfully Accurate

And irresistibly priced at £2.49 a piece in the UK (reported as $4 in the US) and should be in stock from May the 1st. A nice Lego Simpsons intro has been doing the rounds for a couple of weeks too. Check it out if you haven’t already.

Better Call Saul – Breaking Bad Spin-Off

Rumours of a Breaking Bad spin-off featuring Walter White’s accomplice Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) have been circulating for some time but it has been officially announced that Better Call Saul has been picked up by AMC and Sony Pictures Television. The show will be a prequel telling the story of Walt’s less than legit Laywer and how he came to be the character we all know and love from the hit show Breaking Bad.

Other shows announced by AMC this week include a further season for Comic Book Men, a pilot show for Kevin Smith and Ralph Garman’s podcast Hollywood Babble-On to be transferred to screen, a new drama series from Chris Carter, creator of the X-Files, an adaption of the comics book Preacher as well as a companion series for The Walking Dead. Phew! Plenty to chew over there.
