The battle to keep the earth safe from the monstrous Kaiju continues in Pacific Rim: Uprising
2013’s Pacific Rim directed by Guillermo del Toro was a great piece of science fiction action cinema. Set in a world where an interdimensional rift has opened on the sea floor, giant monsters known as Kaiju are crossing into our world and laying waste to cities.
The human race fought back using giant mechs known as Jaegers. Each of these huge fighting robots required two pilots. They would be connected by a neural bridge in a process called “drifting” that would share the mental strain of piloting such a huge piece of machinery.
The film was a moderate success in Europe and the US but really hit it big in China. Del Toro did initially write a script for a sequel and intend to direct as well but due to a dispute between studios, this plan fell by the wayside.
Just when we thought the project was dead, it was announced that Pacific Rim: Uprising had the green light for production and was now being directed by Steven S. DeKnight who is making his directorial debut with this film. He had previously produced such big-name television shows as Spartacus, Marvel’s Daredevil and Smallville. Del Toro still remains attached in a producer capacity.
The film stars John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi) and will see the return of Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Burn Gorman from the original film.

The globe-spanning conflict between otherworldly monsters of mass destruction and the human-piloted super-machines built to vanquish them was only a prelude to the all-out assault on humanity in Pacific Rim Uprising.
John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) stars as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father gave his life to secure humanity’s victory against the monstrous “Kaiju.” Jake has since abandoned his training only to become caught up in a criminal underworld. But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed to tear through our cities and bring the world to its knees, he is given one last chance to live up to his father’s legacy by his estranged sister, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi)—who is leading a brave new generation of pilots that have grown up in the shadow of war. As they seek justice for the fallen, their only hope is to unite together in a global uprising against the forces of extinction.
Jake is joined by gifted rival pilot Lambert (The Fate of the Furious’ Scott Eastwood) and 15-year-old Jaeger hacker Amara (newcomer Cailee Spaeny), as the heroes of the PPDC become the only family he has left. Rising up to become the most powerful defense force to ever walk the earth, they will set course for a spectacular all-new adventure on a towering scale.
