Google’s Stadia is now free for anyone with a Gmail account

A Basic Stadia account is now free for anyone, as long as they have a Gmail account. The Pro account is also free for two months.

In a blog post from Phil Harrison, the Vice President and GM of Google Stadia makes reference to, “some of the most challenging times in recent memory“. Harrison, of course, refers to the current Coronavirus pandemic.

He continues, “Keeping social distance is vital, but staying home for long periods can be difficult and feel isolating. Video games can be a valuable way to socialize with friends and family when you’re stuck at home, so we’re giving gamers in 14 countries free access to Stadia Pro for two months“.

The offer is open to everyone and existing Stadia Pro account holders will benefit from not being billed for the next two months. New users will be charged $9.99 per month after the offer period unless they cancel their subscription. Anyone taking advantage of the offer will be granted instant access to nine games. These include ‘Destiny 2: The Collection’ and ‘GRID’.

Any games bought via the Pro account will remain available, even if the user cancels their Pro account before the end of the free trial.

Better still, and not referenced in Phil Harrison’s post. Stadia Basic is now and will remain available for free too. Users will be afforded gaming at 1080p/60fps with stereo sound. All that is required to take advantage of either offer is to have a Gmail account. Games can be played on Android devices, desktop, laptop and chrome books with a compatible controller.
