Nathan Fillion is Uncharted’s Nathan Drake in this short film that will please many of the game’s fans
The Uncharted series of games have been a huge success for Sony and the software developer Naughty Dog. Starting out on the PlayStation 3, the original Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, released in 1997, was a third person action adventure game that also featured many puzzle elements.
You play as Nathan Drake, a man who shares many similarities with Indiana Jones. He likes to travel the planet discovering lost archaeological treasure. Helping him on these adventures is his partner, Sully.
Nathan also has a great sense of humour that helps him during some of the most difficult spots in his adventures.
The original game was a big success and was followed up by three further titles, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (2009), Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception (2011), with the final instalment Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End (2016) released on the PlayStation 4.
There was also a prequel, Uncharted: Golden Abyss was released for the PlayStation Vita. A standalone spin-off to the series, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, was released in 2017, with Chloe Frazer as the game’s main character who was introduced to the series from the second game.
With such a huge fanbase and every game being reviewed so highly, you’d expect Hollywood to jump on the bandwagon and start making a live-action adaptation.
Well, Hollywood has been trying since 2010 to get a film made. There have been many directors and stars attached to the project and the last we heard was at the beginning of 2017. Joe Carnahan was to direct a story that would be a prequel to the games starring Marvel’s Spider-Man star, Tom Holland.
One actor’s name that kept appearing over the years was Nathon Fillion. He had originally thrown his name into the ring as a contender for the role of Drake. The fans loved the idea especially as Drake and Fillion have a similar look. Fillion’s roles over the years show that he would also be a good contender as someone who would bring the character of Drake to life.
With the news from 2017 of the official film adaptation leaving all our hopes dashed, it was with great surprise that this Uncharted fan film appeared on YouTube.
Directed by Allan Unger, this professional short film stars Fillion as Drake with Stephen Lang, whom most will remember as Colonel Quaritch from Avatar, as his partner Sully.
The story involves Drake trying to steal a set of ancient letters that will hopefully reveal the whereabouts of a sunken ship that contains a wealth of ancient treasure.
I must say that this was an excellent short that certainly contains the spirit of the games and demonstrates how we could have had an action film series starring Fillion as Drake. I particularly liked the shootout that mimics in live action what you would see in the game.
As with most of these shorts, by the time it was over, I was ready to carry on watching a full-length version.
