LEGO announces it’s new Ghostbusters: Afterlife ECTO-1 set

A new ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ ECTO-1 set is LEGO’s largest version of the famous movie car yet with over two thousand bricks.

The release of ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife‘ may have been tentatively rescheduled for a June 2021 release in cinemas (thanks to Covid-19), but LEGO are releasing their new tie-in ECTO-1 model in time for the holiday season. If you can’t get to the movies, you can, at least, while away some time building this beautiful 2,352 piece set.

Made famous in ‘Ghostbusters’ (1984), ECTO-1 became as much of a cinematic icon as it’s charismatic cast. The converted Cadillac ambulance/hearse, with it’s distinctive siren, stacked up roof rack and red and white colours captured the imagination of fans across the globe.

ECTO-1 returned in ‘Ghostbusters II’, featured in ‘The Real Ghostbusters’ animated series and will return once more as a barn find in next year’s ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’.

This isn’t the first ECTO-1 set LEGO have produced. In 2014 we were excited by their 508 piece set. Now, with more than four times the number of bricks, LEGO are ready to empty our wallets once again.

LEGO designer, Michael Psiaki, is the man behind the new ECTO-1 set. He also designed the James Bond Aston Martin DB5. Of the new Ghostbusters model he said “I loved the challenge of working on the ECTO-1. This is the largest and most detailed version of this car that we have ever created. It is crammed full of authentic features and easter eggs that I’m excited for builders to discover as they put this model together“.

Two new components will debut with the release of ECTO-1. The 6×14 curved windscreen and a new 5 module steering wheel. Other features of the set include a moving ‘Ghost Sniffer’, an extendable rear gunner seat and working steering.

The set measures in at over 8” (22.5cm) high, 18” (47cm) long and 6” (16.5cm) wide and forms part of LEGO’s adult range of movie vehicles. The range also features the recently revealed Batman, Batwing.
