Luke Cage Is The Latest Marvel Show To Be Axed By Netflix

Last week we learned that Iron Fist had been cancelled by Netflix. It’s now been announced that Luke Cage will also not be returning for a third season.

Despite a better second season the news that Marvel’s ‘Iron Fist’ had been cancelled by Netflix wasn’t hugely surprising. Of the four characters that collectively form the ‘Defenders’, the standalone ‘Iron Fist’ series is widely considered the least popular.

The news that ‘Luke Cage’ is also being axed after two seasons has fans more concerned. Not only was the series well received, it also performed the important task of promoting cultural diversity in a genre that predominantly focuses on white male heroes.

The Luke Cage twitter page posted this image suggesting the character might not be done yet.

In a joint statement Marvel and Netflix announced “Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series“.

With the news of the show’s cancellation effectively trimming Netflix’s rosta to just three Marvel properties fans are concerned for the remaining shows. ‘Daredevil’ – which has just seen a third season debut on the streaming platform – is the most popular with viewers with ‘Jessica Jones’ a close second. The Punisher being the third remaining show.

It’s entirely likely that Disney, who own Marvel, are either gearing up to move the shows to their own streaming service which the company is preparing to launch. Another theory is that Marvel are cancelling some shows with a view to creating new character specific series.
