Nintendo Power Is Back… But Not How You Remember

Fondly remembered as the leading magazine for Nintendo fans, Nintendo Power published its last issue in December 2012. In December 2017 it’s back… sort of.

Not only was Nintendo Power the officially licensed magazine for Nintendo in North America, it was also one of the longest running video game publications in the U.S. and Canada with its first issue hitting shelves in 1988.

After twenty four years Nintendo took the decision not to renew their license with Future US, a subsidiary of UK publishers Future, and the magazine published the final issue, #285, on the 11th December 2012.

Five years later and Nintendo Power is back, but not in any previously recognisable form. Nintendo of America has adopted the name and relaunched as a podcast.

The official release reads:

Nintendo of America has released the very first episode of its new Nintendo Power Podcast. With Nintendo Power Podcast, Nintendo employees, developers and special guests discuss the world of Nintendo – from Mario to the Legend of Zelda, and everything in between.

The first episode of the powered-up podcast features an in-depth interview with Nintendo developers Eiji Aonuma and Hidemaro Fujibayashi about the making of the Legend of Zelda™: Breath of the Wild game.

Also, Nintendo of America employees Chris Slate (previously editor-in-chief of Nintendo Power™ magazine), Damon Baker (from Publisher and Developer Relations) and Kit Ellis (co-host of Nintendo’s weekly YouTube show Nintendo Minute) take a look back at Nintendo’s action-packed 2017.

The ‘Nintendo Power Podcast’ is currently available via Apple Podcasts, Soundcloud and on YouTube.
