Finally there’s a little bit of light relief coming to the interminably sour DC movie universe. Shazam! looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun.
Zachary Levi stars as the titular superhero in DC’s long awaited ‘Shazam!’ movie. The film tells the story of Billy Batson, an orphan who’s having a tough time fitting into any foster home.
An unexpected encounter bestows incredible power on the boy who becomes a mighty hero merely by saying the word Shazam! But can a young boy in a man’s body utilise the power for good, when he’s not even sure how to pee in whilst wearing the costume?
There’s been little reason to get excited for this film. With a few exceptions the DC movie universe has generally fallen flat with superhero fans and movie-goers in general.
Finally, it seems, the folks at Warner Bros. who produce these films seem to have realised the key to Marvel’s contrasting success. Levity. Coincidence then that Zachary Levi (see what I did there?) is cast in the lead as Shazam!
The actor has comedy credentials and a likeable persona. Clearly the film is a light-hearted attempt at a hero movie that breaks from the current sombre precedent of previous films based on DC properties.
Shazam! hits UK and US cinemas on April 5th 2019.
