SEGA have announced their final line up of games for the Mega Drive mini with two bonus titles. Japan will also get some cool looking, but ultimately useless, accessories.
Announced back in March, the SEGA Mega Drive mini felt a lot like the company jumping on the miniature classic console bandwagon a little too late. But the former rivals of Nintendo are doing their best to change that perception.
Expected to come bundled with 40 built-in titles, SEGA dropped a couple of surprises for their final reveal. Firstly there are two bonus titles bringing the final game count to 42. And exciting titles they are too.
First up is ‘Darius’, a classic arcade 2D horizontal scrolling shoot-em-up. SEGA have stated that the game – never before available on the Mega Drive – is a brand new port developed by their M2 division and overseen by Taito, the game’s original publisher. Though there is some speculation over at Kotaku that this may actually be a fan port of the game adopted by SEGA.
SEGA’s second bonus game is the ultra rare, ‘Tetris’. The title achieved notoriety on Nintendo’s Game Boy whilst SEGA released their own shape stacking title, ‘Columns’, as a rival for the Game Gear. Eurogamer suggest that no more than ten copies of ‘Tetris’ are still in existence for the Mega Drive, making this a much sought after game for any fan’s collection.
Perhaps the most bizarre news coming from the SEGA camp, regarding their mini console, are the accessories that will be available for it in Japan.
For aesthetic purposes only, collectors will be able to purchase a Mega Drive ‘tower’. A mini replica Mega CD, a mini 32X to plugin the top, which will even come with a ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ cartridge to plug into it too. None of these extras function in any capacity, but they do look kinda cool.
Here’s the full, final list of titles released for SEGA’s Mega Drive mini, due for release on September 19th and available for pre-order now.
