Arnold Schwarzenegger returns in his iconic Terminator role in a new film that ignores sequels.
Personally, I feel that the long-running Terminator franchise, that started in 1984 with the original film, peaked with the first sequel, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, and has been sliding downhill ever since. That downhill slide also seems to be getting faster with every new entry into the franchise.
Terminator (1984) told the story of how one man, John Connor, will lead the resistance against an army of killing machines lead by the artificial intelligence known as Skynet. Fearing it was losing the battle, Skynet sends a lone killing machine, a Terminator, back in time to kill Sarah Connor, John’s mother, thus negating his existence. However, upon learning this plan, John sends one of his best soldiers back through time to protect his mother.
Terminator is a solid piece of sci-fi action and is regarded as a classic film. The sequel, Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991), saw two Terminators sent back through time. One was sent to kill John Connor, the other, protect him.
The film was a huge success, filled with amazing action set pieces and brilliant use of CGI which was still in its infancy at the time.
Terminator 2 brought the storyline to an admittidly open-ended conclusion but in a way that didn’t need further films. Hollywood disagreed and a further three sequels have come along since with the last entry, Terminator: Genisys, is the weakest so far.
So it was a little worrying when Terminator: Dark Fate was announced but initial story details were intriguing.
The film will be set immediately after Terminator 2 and will ignore the three sequels as if they never existed. James Cameron, the director of the first two films is producing, overseeing Deadpool director, Tim Miller.
Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a Terminator once again joined by Linda Hamilton reprising her role as Sarah Connor.
New to the series are Mackenzie Davis, Natalia Reyes, Diego Boneta and Gabriel Luna who has been confirmed as a new type of Terminator.
Terminator: Dark Fate opens in the US on November 1st and in the UK on October 23rd. Other territories, check IMDb for details.
