As we eagerly await the debut of a fifth season of The Expanse on Amazon, the network provides mixed news for the future of the show.
In 2018 The Expanse looked to be doomed. The series had enjoyed three successful seasons on SYFY, amassing a loyal fanbase. When news dropped that the network were cancelling the gritty space opera, that fanbase set about launching a campaign to save it. Not long passed before Amazon’s streaming service picked up The Expanse, renewing it for fourth season.
A commission for a fifth season was announced before the fourth had aired. The same is true for a sixth season. As we eagerly await the opportunity to find out what comes next for the crew of the ‘Rocinante’ in season five, Amazon have hit us with two pieces of news.
There will be a sixth season. Yay! That’s great news. But… it will be the final one.
Fans will, no doubt, be saddened to learn that The Expanse has been cancelled for a second time. Amazon’s approach has, however, been vastly different from when SYFY unceremoniously canned the show two years ago. The show’s creators now have the opportunity to wrap up the story with enough forewarning for it to make sense.
There appears to be no animosity either. The Expanse’s showrunners continue to praise Amazon in a statement. “We also would like to thank Amazon for their continuing support to help us tell this story in its fullest and to bring The Expanse to a global audience”.
Season five begins on Amazon Prime Video on December 16th.
Time to start campaigning for The Expanse movie now, I guess? Who’s with me?!
