Season 4 hasn’t dropped yet, but Amazon have renewed The Expanse for a fifth season having picked up the show from SyFy.
The Expanse is proving to be the sci-fi show that refuses to quit – and rightly so. Without doubt the series is the boldest, most fascinating space opera on television right now. It still blows my mind that after three seasons the show looked dead and buried when SyFy cancelled the series.
Fans petitioned to save the crew of the Rocinante. After all, season three received an unprecedented 100% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and concluded with a plot that stood on the precipice of huge potential. The show’s producers vowed to seek out a new home for The Expanse – and after an agonising pause – Amazon stepped in.
Commissioning a fourth season, Amazon became the new home for The Expanse, and they must be happy with what they’ve seen. Before the new season has aired and before the fans have cast their opinions, Amazon have renewed The Expanse for a fifth season.
Perhaps it makes good business sense to film two seasons back to back? Utilise the sets for longer, keep the creative juices flowing. Who knows? But this news makes me happy.
The Expanse doesn’t just provide action, camaraderie, thrills, spills and adversity. It brings together human nature, politics and the unknown in huge helpings. I can’t wait to get back out to the Belt to find out what happens next.
Season four of The Expanse drops onto Amazon Prime Video from December this year.
