The Geekend Review | Taking a look back and forward at cool geek news.

The Geekend Review, “the cool form of uncool before uncool became a thing”. We take a look at some of the more exciting news stories to have dropped over the last week and what’s coming soon.

Amazon continue to grow their empire with the acquisition of the digital comic platform comiXology, we get a look at some new images from Marvels highly anticipated movie Guardians Of The Galaxy, we could have an X-Men spin-off movie for Mystique to look forward to and Joss Whedon invades my little corner of south east London as The Avengers: Age OF Ultron crew roll in to town for some ballroom scenes.

Amazon buys comiXology.

It’s hard to believe that comiXology is only seven years old. The New York City start-up offers around 50,000 comic titles from the industry big two, Marvel and DC Comics, as well as many smaller publishers and independents.

This week it was announced that Amazon had acquired the company after several weeks of speculation. Amazon’s plans for the company are unclear in terms of how they plan to integrate comiXology into their services, whether it will ultimately be integrated into its Kindle offering. What we do know is that the company will continue to operate out of New York and maintain its identity for now.

comiXology CEO David Steinberger issued this statement:

Dearest readers,

I’m very excited to share some big news with you: we have just announced that comiXology is becoming a part of the Amazon family!

More than seven years ago, John D. Roberts, Peter Jaffe, and I set out to connect people to comic books and graphic novels they’d love, and we’re so excited about how far we’ve come. Thanks to the books we are privileged to present and the platform we created, there’s access to more diverse content than ever, allowing all readers to enter the amazing world of comics.

We have long had the goal of making every person on the planet a comics fan. With Amazon’s help, this crazy goal is more possible than ever before. With the Kindle, Amazon has shown a passion for reinventing the reading experience, just like comiXology has shown for comics and graphic novels.

ComiXology will retain its identity as an Amazon subsidiary and we’re not anywhere near done “taking comics further.” We are confident that – with Amazon by our side, who shares our desire for innovation and a relentless focus on customers – we’ve only just begun.

We wouldn’t be here without you, our customers. Thank you. The best is yet to come!

Mystique Could Be Set To Feature In A Stand-Alone X-Men Spin-Off Movie.

It’s no secret that Jennifer Lawrence is hot in Hollywood right now and thanks to her on-screen portrayal of Mystique in X-Men Days Of Future Past there could be a spin-off movie heading to our screens soon.

The X-Men franchise continues to roll on and of course there has already been a stand-alone movie in the form of the distinctly average The Wolverine.

X-Men First Class writer-producer told Entertainment WeeklyI love what Jen Lawrence has done with her, and I feel like because she is in such a crowded ensemble, there’s so much more opportunity if you were to follow her solo

There have also been hints that fan favourite Deadpool and Gambit could also get the solo treatment in future. X-Men Days Of Future Past is due in cinemas in the UK on the 22nd and the US on the 23rd of May.

Age Of Ultron On My Street.

Joss Whedon and the crew filming The Avengers: Age Of Ultron have literally been on my street this week and filming at the nearby Rivoli Ballroom.

The Rivoli Ballroom is far from extraordinary from the outside, but inside its a pristine example of a classic 1950s ballroom and is the only one of its kind still intact in London. The Rivoli plays host to regular film crews as it forms a wonderful set for television shows and music videos, therefore it’s not uncommon to find a number of trucks parked nearby and camera equipment being lugged around. Over the last three days though it became apparent that there was something big happening. There were three or four times the number of trucks not only outside the Rivoli but also in a adjacent road and even on my street a couple of minutes walk away from the venue.

I didn’t think much of it until I received a text from my wife today informing me that a local community website Brockley Central were reporting that the shoot was for The Avengers: Age Of Ultron and Joss Whedon had been collared on the Brockley Road for an instagram photo with some lucky passers by. Locals report that extras dressed in 1940s war time uniforms were seen entering the ballroom, along with Captain America himself (Chris Evans), Agent Carter (Hayley Atwell) and British actor Paul Bettany whose role as the voice of J.A.R.V.I.S in the Iron Man movies will see him become The Vision in Age Of Ultron.

Check out for pictures taken on location (I love the one of Whedon in a local cake shop with a little lad wearing a Spider-Man hoody and Marvel hat).
