Tom Cruise reprises his role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, a sequel more than thirty years in the making.
Top Gun became an instant classic way back in 1986. Starring Tom Cruise as Navy pilot Pete Mitchell – code-named “Maverick” – the film presented a unique blend of action, romance, (presumably) unintentional homo-erotica and a soundtrack of passionate rock ballads and anthems.
More than thirty years on we catch up once more with Maverick and discover that the ‘Top Gun’ pilot hasn’t really moved on that much. In a first trailer for ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ we witness the titular character being dressed down for his lack of ambition.
“Blah, blah, whatever. I’m more interested in the planes, mate”, is essentially the sentiment. Cue Tom Cruise flying a plane really fast, really low and then really high before nose-diving behind a mountain. Epic!
Tom Cruise isn’t the only actor returning from the first Top Gun movie. Val Kilmer is also cast as “Iceman”. The pair famously faced off in one of the original film’s most talked about scenes – the beach volleyball match.
‘Top Gun: Maverick’ is slated for a June 2020 release in North America with a U.K cinematic debut scheduled for a month later in July.
