John Constantine is the main character from the DC published Hellblazer comic. He is a chain smoking occult detective. A con-man and a magician who resides in England.
Constantine has been bought to the screen before in the form of actor Keanu Reeves in the 2005 film of the same name. There was a lot of negative comments from the comic book fans as the film strayed from the original source material.
Now NBC are bringing constantine to the small screen from a script written by David Goyer (The Dark Knight trilogy, Man Of Steel) and director Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent, Black Sails, Game of Thrones), and today they released the first image of the main character as played by Matt Ryan. Goyer has mentioned that it is unlikely that his chain smoking habit will make it too the small screen as that is frowned upon by todays television networks.
As production begins on the new pilot CONSTANTINE — from executive producers Daniel Cerone & David S. Goyer and director Neil Marshall — NBC, Warner Bros. Television and DC Entertainment are today releasing the first official image of series star Matt Ryan in character as John Constantine.
“I’ve been a fan of John Constantine since he was first introduced in 1985. This Constantine, envisioned by Neil Marshall and embodied by Matt Ryan, looks like he sprang directly from the comics’ covers. Fans old and new are going to be in for a treat,” said executive producer David S. Goyer.
CONSTANTINE follows enigmatic and irreverent Liverpool con-man-turned-occult-detective John Constantine, who is reluctantly thrust into the role of defending our world against dark forces from beyond.
Featured in hundreds of comic book issues, John Constantine has been a DC Comics staple since his first appearance as a supporting character in Swamp Thing in 1985. The character was subsequently featured in his own bestselling Hellblazer and Constantine comic book series.
